SNS JU Newsflash June 2026:
June 2026 highlights a clear transition phase for Europe’s 6G ecosystem, marked by increasing convergence between research, system integration and early deployment. The strong visibility of SNS JU at EuCNC & 6G Summit 2026 in Málaga, alongside contributions to major policy discussions, international workshops and upcoming calls, reflects a continued effort to position Europe at the forefront of next-generation connectivity. Strategic dialogues on technological sovereignty, ecosystem integration and the articulation between 5G evolution and 6G ambitions further underline the maturity of the European agenda, while reinforcing alignment between EU-level initiatives and national programmes such as France 6G.

At the same time, SNS JU projects and stakeholders maintained a high level of activity through conferences, webinars, workshops, demonstrations and publications, covering key domains including AI-native networks, integrated sensing and communication, sustainability, cloud-edge continuum, digital twins and advanced optical systems. A growing number of demonstrators, pilots and open experimentation results illustrate tangible progress toward validation and real-world applicability, with increasing emphasis on standardisation, interoperability and cross-sector use cases. Overall, June confirms a shift from conceptual research toward implementation and impact, with the ecosystem steadily advancing toward scalable 6G deployment environments.

SNS JU at EuCNC & 6G Summit 2026: From Research to Real-World Impact
|
|
|
At EuCNC & 6G Summit 2026 in Málaga, over 1,200 participants from 40 countries and 102 exhibitors confirmed the event’s role as Europe’s flagship platform for 5G Advanced and 6G.
|
|
SNS JU showcased concrete applications across sectors, including emergency response, non-terrestrial connectivity, immersive XR, smart mobility, sustainable ports, and energy-efficient networks, highlighting the maturity of European innovation.
|
|
|
The summit also underscored the importance of building an integrated European technology ecosystem. Thibaut Kleiner (Vice-Chair of the SNS JU Governing Board and Director for Future Networks at DG Connect, European Commission) stressed the need to reinforce Europe's technological sovereignty by developing a full technology stack spanning hardware, software, AI, cloud, connectivity and quantum technologies. He highlighted the Tech Sovereignty Package as marking a shift from regulation to the active shaping of Europe's technological future, and recalled the SNS JU's central role in driving next-generation technologies in support of this broader ambition. Erzsébet Fitori, SNS JU Executive Director, described 6G as an inflection point enabling “connected intelligence” across edge-to-orbit architectures.

NetworldEurope SME Working Group hosted the session “The SME Factor in Europe’s Sovereignty”, bringing SME voices into the debate on 6G innovation, resilience, market uptake and stronger SME representation in strategic decision-making. Press Release available here.

Community engagement was reinforced through interactive sessions, networking, and the “6G Wall,” alongside a use case competition selecting the “10 most inspiring use cases” from a large portfolio, illustrating scalable applications across mobility, eHealth, industry, and sustainability.

Overall, the summit marked a transition from research to system integration and early deployment. The next edition will take place in Dublin (8–11 June 2027), continuing efforts to strengthen Europe’s leadership in 6G.

Call for Papers: 6G-focused special sessions at IEEE CSCN 2026

A call for papers is open for two special sessions to be held at IEEE CSCN 2026 (7–9 September 2026, London). The session “AI-Nativeness for 6G: Architectures and Technologies” will address AI-native approaches to enhance energy efficiency, resilience, and security across 6G systems, with support from SNS JU projects PIONEERS-6G, PAISES-6G, 6G-PATH, 6G-VERSUS, and PROSPERO. In parallel, the NetworldEurope Working Group will organise the session “AI-Native and Intent-Driven 6G Networks: Current Progress in 5G-Advanced and the Roadmap to 6G”, focusing on the transition towards next-generation networks. The submission deadline is set for 1 July 2026.

European Commission launches Call for Evidence on Horizon Europe partnerships

The European Commission has launched a call for evidence on the future implementation of European Partnerships under Horizon Europe (2028–2034), with feedback open from 16 June to 14 July 2026. The initiative aims to strengthen impact by streamlining partnership models and adopting a portfolio approach aligned with the European Competitiveness Fund. Selected partnerships may be implemented as Joint Undertakings under Article 187 TFEU, based on clear added value and harmonised rules. This proposal will feed into a regulation expected to be adopted in Q4 2026, following a public consultation phase.

Another demo highlights a transport Network Slice Controller managing slice lifecycle operations end-to-end. The last video covers critical maintenance during disaster scenarios under energy-constrained conditions, with a focus on resilient 6G operations.

AMBIENT-6G showcases ambient backscatter demo aligned with emerging WiFi standard

INSTINCT 6G advances ML-enabled JCAS network architecture in WP3 workshop

A dedicated session on Smart Connectivity was co-organised with the Smart Connectivity Thematic Working Group, focusing on the use of experimental infrastructures to develop innovative use cases within a "test before invest" framework.
|
Rather than following a traditional lecture format, this session was designed around active networking. Building on feedback from the previous year - which underlined a strong appetite for greater ecosystem visibility and hands-on interaction - the session introduced a structured "I have / I am looking for" marketplace. The goal was to make the most of the rare opportunity for in-person exchange by mapping participants' capabilities and identifying the partners or expertise they need to better serve local SMEs and meet cross-border KPIs.

The summit also featured a success story contest, which attracted 69 submissions. Three entries received awards, all of which showcased 5G-based solutions.

|
|
The collection of replicable use cases from SNS JU projects is ongoing. The catalog has been updated and now includes 177 replicable use cases, spanning most industry verticals. These are also accessible through the Vertical Engagement Tracker.
