SNS JU @ MWC 2026

The SNS JU will host a high-level session at Mobile World Congress titled “6G, Cloud, Edge, AI: The New Power Stack for Industrial Leadership – A European Vision for Future Connectivity.”
The session takes place on Monday 2 March 2026, from 09:00 to 10:15 (doors open at 08:30), at the Marconi Stage (Hall 6) at Fira Barcelona in Barcelona. Opening remarks will be delivered by Colin Willcock and Thibaut Kleiner (European Commission DG CONNECT), and the discussion will be moderated by Erzsébet Fitori. Seating is strictly limited to 250 attendees, so registration via the MWC website and early arrival are strongly recommended.

6G-IA urges EU policymakers to prioritise digital connectivity and telecommunications in FP10

In January 2026, the 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) sent a letter to key policymakers within the EU institutions to request that the digital connectivity and telecommunications sector is recognised as a strategic priority in FP10.
The letter presents the 6G-IA vision as detailed proposals for the digital connectivity and smart service provision, via three main pillars (i.e. ‘R&D Pillar’, ‘Experimental Pillar’, Pre-deployment and Market Uptake Pillar’) and cross-sector synergies, that should be supported in FP10.

SNS JU reveals its 2025 top-10 Key Achievements in 6G innovation

In 2025, the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) released its first Top-10 Key Achievements, selected from 188 results across 63 projects, highlighting major advances in 6G research and innovation including energy-efficient hardware, experimental 6G platforms, XR services, optical transport and standardisation. The initiative showcases the impact of EU-funded research in strengthening Europe’s leadership in sustainable and competitive 6G networks.

SNS JU releases R&I work programme 2026 for 6G research

The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) has published its 2026–2027 Work Programme, announcing the R&I Work Programme 2026 with €22 million allocated to five projects supporting 6G research and innovation. The programme focuses on 6G foundations, including AI for networks, experimental testbeds, devices, datasets, international cooperation and standardisation, and will underpin the sixth SNS call for proposals, opening on 29 January 2026 with a deadline of 29 April 2026.

Workshop on European Priorities for Day-1

6G Standardisation

The SNS JU Policy Working Group organised a workshop on European priorities for Day-1 6G standardisation, held in Brussels on 29 January 2026, bringing together European vertical industries, vendors and operators. The event focused on embedding European priorities into the first global 6G standards, notably 3GPP Release 21, addressing business-driven use cases, key day-one technical features and collaboration opportunities for 6G standardisation.

SNS JU Opens Call to join its stakeholders’ group

The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) has launched a Call for Expression of Interest to join its Stakeholders Group, an advisory body contributing to the strategic orientation of Europe’s 5G and 6G ecosystem. The call is open to public and private actors across the connectivity value chain, with applications due by 31 March 2026.

European Commission unveils €14 Billion Horizon Europe investment for 2026–2027

The European Commission has adopted the Horizon Europe 2026–2027 work programme, committing €14 billion to support research and innovation, with priorities including climate neutrality, artificial intelligence and European competitiveness.

EU Code of Conduct for the sustainability of telecommunications networks

Last 29 January 2026, The European Commission published the EU Code of Conduct for the Sustainability of Telecommunication Networks. The document sets expected (and optional) practices to track progress toward EU climate targets. Signatories commit to implement tracking in 2026, publish first data points, and share lessons learned by Q2 2027, with some optional practices likely to become mandatory in future updates.

European Commission releases proposal for the Digital Networks Act (DNA)

On 21 January 2026, the European Commission presented its proposal for the Digital Networks Act (DNA), aiming to simplify and harmonise EU telecom regulation to strengthen digital connectivity and competitiveness. The DNA would replace the EU Electronic Communications Code, reduce market fragmentation, and support cross-border innovation, while reinforcing network security, resilience, and the deployment of AI, cloud and other advanced technologies.

European Commission proposes a revised Cybersecurity Act

On 20 January 2026, the European Commission presented a proposal to revise the EU Cybersecurity Act, aiming to strengthen Europe’s cybersecurity resilience in the face of increasing cyber and hybrid threats.
The proposal enhances the security of EU ICT supply chains, improves and simplifies EU-wide cybersecurity certification for digital products and services, and reduces administrative complexity for companies. It also reinforces the role of ENISA in supporting Member States’ preparedness and response to common cyber threats.

EU and India adopt a Joint Comprehensive Strategic Agenda towards 2030

On 27 January 2026, the European Union and India adopted “Towards 2030: A Joint Comprehensive Strategic Agenda” at the 16th EU–India Summit in New Delhi.
The Agenda strengthens the EU–India strategic partnership by setting a common framework for cooperation on technology and innovation, sustainability, security, connectivity, and global governance. It replaces the Roadmap to 2025 and provides a forward-looking basis for deeper, coordinated action up to 2030.

EuroHPC Regulation amended to boost Europe’s AI and quantum capabilities

On 19 January 2026, the European Commission adopted an amendment to the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking Regulation, strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy in HPC, AI and quantum technologies, with entry into force on 20 January 2026. The revised mandate supports AI Gigafactories and advanced quantum infrastructures, providing large-scale computing for next-generation AI models, with a first EU call expected in Q1 2026.

EU and Republic of Korea strengthen digital and tech cooperation

At the third EU–Republic of Korea Digital Partnership Council, held on 28 November 2025 in Seoul, the EU and the Republic of Korea reaffirmed their cooperation on emerging digital technologies, including semiconductors, 6G, AI, quantum technologies and cybersecurity. The partners agreed to strengthen joint research under Horizon Europe, regulatory and standards cooperation, data interoperability and cyber dialogue, with the next Council to be held in Brussels in 2026.

EU and Canada reinforce digital partnership including telecom subjects

The European Union and Canada strengthened their digital partnership at the first Digital Partnership Council in Montreal, focusing on secure connectivity and telecommunications infrastructures. The partners agreed to cooperate on 5G networks, subsea cables, including potential Arctic routes, as well as cloud infrastructure, data centres, semiconductors and high-performance computing to support resilient next-generation digital services.
