SUMMARY:The Swedish National Initiative on 6G: Perspectives from the Advanced Digitalisation program
DESCRIPTION:The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) is at the forefront of driving innovation in next-generation communication technologies and services across Europe. At the same time\, various national initiatives in Europe are actively advancing 6G technologies and smart services. The SNS JU plays a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between these national initiatives and SNS projects by facilitating the exchange of best practices\, research findings\, and results. \nAs highlighted in the recently published SNS R&I Work Programme 2025 (SNS WP 2025)\, the SNS JU actively encourages the integration of results and experimental platforms from national initiatives into its calls. This approach ensures that Europe remains competitive in the global technology race by effectively pooling expertise and resources across national and EU levels. Furthermore\, it supports the EU’s strategic goals of digital sovereignty and technological independence by fostering a cohesive and collaborative research and innovation ecosystem. \nIn alignment with these goals\, and as part of the SNS CSA CO-OP project\, 6G-IA is organising a series of webinars where various national initiatives will showcase their key achievements and share information about their experimental platforms. \nThe fifth webinar in this series was scheduled to take place on 28th Oct 2025\, from 13:00 to 14:30 CET\, featuring an in-depth presentation of the Swedish 6G R&I activities as a part of their national program. \n  \nSwedish National Initiative\nAdvanced Digitalisation is an industry-driven research and innovation program aimed at promoting and accelerating Sweden’s and Swedish industry’s capacity to create the digital solutions of the future\, thereby driving the necessary transitions we face. This is achieved by funding demand-driven research and innovation initiatives and establishing cross-sectoral structures for collaboration. With a yearly budget of SEK 1 billion (about EUR 900 million)\, the program is one of the largest research and innovation initiatives in Sweden. \nDigital infrastructure and communication are one of the program’s central focus areas\, making Advanced Digitalisation Sweden’s leading funder of research and innovation in the field. The program supports the development and use of 5G in industry and highlights the importance of 5G Standalone as both a driver for industrial digital transformation today and a necessary step towards 6G. \nIn this webinar\, Sweden introduced their program and took a closer look at some initiatives within digital infrastructure\, with a particular focus on 6G. Representatives from competence centres and a strategic project funded by the program shared insights from their work. DESCRIPTION:On 22–23 October 2025\, the ATTA Centre in Riga\, Latvia\, will host Techritory 2025\, a leading European forum on digitalisation and connectivity. Under the theme “Connected Futures through Digital Paths”\, the event will gather over 600 speakers and guests from industry\, research\, policy\, and innovation. It will feature SNS-funded projects\, EC representatives\, ETSI experts\, and industry leaders\, with a panel on aligning standards\, trials\, and markets. \n\nA European Cloud: Myth or Reality? (22 October\, 11:00–12:30). This session will explore the role of cloud computing in Europe’s digital transformation\, focusing on sovereignty\, sustainability\, and innovation for 6G. It will present key initiatives such as 3C Networks\, highlight perspectives from open-source communities\, operators and telecom players\, and discuss business opportunities and regulatory needs for strengthening Europe’s cloud ecosystem.\n\nStage contributions\n6G-IA and SNS JU experts will also join high-level stage discussions: \n\nEuropean Leadership in Key Digital Sectors: Driving FP10 to Success (23 October\, 10:30-11:20)\nThis panel will bring together technology leaders from telecoms\, cloud\, AI\, and microelectronics\, alongside European Commission representatives\, to address opportunities and threats for research and innovation beyond 2030. With a forward-looking investment plan\, France is positioning itself at the forefront of global transformation in areas such as telecommunications\, electronics\, cybersecurity\, cloud and edge computing\, artificial intelligence\, biotechnologies\, and quantum technologies. \nThis strategy targets both national resilience and economic competitiveness\, addressing major societal challenges such as energy transition\, food security\, healthcare\, sustainable mobility\, and digital trust. France 2030 supports the full innovation chain—from fundamental research to industrial deployment—through a range of instruments including the Future Investment Program (PIA)\, targeted calls for collaborative R&D projects\, and the Priority Research and Equipment Programs (PEPRs). At the same time\, various national initiatives in Europe are actively advancing 6G technologies and smart services. The SNS JU plays a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between these national initiatives and SNS projects by facilitating the exchange of best practices\, research findings\, and results. \nAs highlighted in the recently published SNS R&I Work Programme 2025 (SNS WP 2025)\, the SNS JU actively encourages the integration of results and experimental platforms from national initiatives into its calls. With the advent of advanced technologies such as WebAssembly\, it is possible to run services efficiently across all devices\, machines\, and operating systems with low startup latency\, minimal runtime overhead\, and high levels of isolation. As a result\, these modern technologies are revolutionizing all layers of the cloud-edge continuum\, from serverless functions in the cloud\, over in-network execution and edge computing\, to true IoT devices and micro-controllers. \nThe WACE Workshop will address critical technical issues at the intersection of modern technologies such as WebAssembly and the cloud-edge continuum. Key research areas include: \n\nOrchestrating WebAssembly workloads: The deployment\, distribution and management of WebAssembly workloads\, including management of serverless WebAssembly functions\, scheduling of WebAssembly workloads over heterogeneous fog networks\, integrating WebAssembly workloads in existing orchestration platforms\, and novel WebAssembly-native orchestrators.\nWebAssembly for in-network execution: Leverage WebAssembly for distributing\, executing and managing Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) within modern cloud infrastructures. VNFs can benefit from improved performance\, security\, and isolation\, enabling seamless deployment and execution of network functions closer to the edge by using WebAssembly.\nSecurity and Isolation of cloud-edge workloads: Novel technologies for workload isolation\, including hardware isolation such as secure enclaves\, Intel SGX and Arm TrustZone. Containerization platforms such as MicroVMs\, WebAssembly components and Docker containers. Capability-based access control such as WebAssembly System Interface.\nWorkload management on constrained devices and alternative architectures: Novel method- ologies for optimizing workload performance on devices with limited computational resources\, power\, and memory. This includes lightweight containerization\, efficient resource allocation\, adaptive scheduling\, and energy-aware computing strategies.\nFull-lifecycle management of services in the edge-cloud continuum: Comprehensive strate- gies for managing services throughout their lifecycle\, from deployment to maintenance and decommissioning\, across the edge-cloud continuum. This includes continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines\, automated scaling\, monitoring and diagnostics\, service orchestration\, and lifecycle policies for hybrid and multi-cloud environments.\n\nIn summary\, the WACE workshop will explore novel practices and methodologies in the Cloud and Edge Computing domains\, covering cutting-edge topics aligned with current academic and industry trends. Identifying and analyzing controversies—examining stakeholder perspectives\, competing claims\, and underlying tensions—is fundamental to fostering trust\, mitigating conflict\, and ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable adoption of 6G. \nControversies are not simply obstacles; they are part of society’s negotiation process over technological change. They reflect broader discussions about governance\, power\, values\, and risk distribution. Engaging with these disputes allows us to anticipate concerns\, address misinformation\, and develop frameworks for a more responsible and widely accepted 6G deployment. \nThis webinar will explore: \n\nWhat we can learn from past controversies\, particularly surrounding 5G\, and how they might evolve with 6G;\nHow technological disputes arise and what role values\, economic interests\, and governance structures play;\nHow stakeholders can engage more effectively with the public to foster trust and transparency;\nHow controversy analysis can contribute to the development of an EU consensus framework for a sustainable and ethical 6G.\n\nBringing together expertise from Science and Technology Studies (STS) and the sociohistory of ICTs\, our panelists will provide insights into the patterns\, dynamics\, and governance of technology controversies and offer strategies for navigating them in 6G development. \nKey Speakers\n\nDr. Ana Delicado – Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS)\, University of Lisbon. Dr. Delicado specializes in the social dimensions of science and technology\, with a strong focus on public perception\, communication\, and participation in technological decision-making. Her work explores how controversies arise in emerging technologies and how public engagement can contribute to more inclusive and responsible innovation. In this webinar\, she will examine the role of scientific and technological controversies in shaping public trust\, policy and acceptance\, highlighting key lessons for 6G.\nAdrien Tournier – Doctoral Researcher in Sociohistory of Science and Technology\, Cnam\, Paris. Tournier’s research focuses on the historical development of telecommunications infrastructures\, particularly mobile networks\, and the socio-political controversies surrounding them. He investigates how past controversies around 3G\, 4G\, inform public debates and regulatory frameworks for 5G.
