With the advent of advanced technologies such as WebAssembly\, it is possible to run services efficiently across all devices\, machines\, and operating systems with low startup latency\, minimal runtime overhead\, and high levels of isolation. As a result\, these modern technologies are revolutionizing all layers of the cloud-edge continuum\, from serverless functions in the cloud\, over in-network execution and edge computing\, to true IoT devices and micro-controllers. \nThe WACE Workshop will address critical technical issues at the intersection of modern technologies such as WebAssembly and the cloud-edge continuum. Key research areas include: \n\nOrchestrating WebAssembly workloads: The deployment\, distribution and management of WebAssembly workloads\, including management of serverless WebAssembly functions\, scheduling of WebAssembly workloads over heterogeneous fog networks\, integrating WebAssembly workloads in existing orchestration platforms\, and novel WebAssembly-native orchestrators.\nWebAssembly for in-network execution: Leverage WebAssembly for distributing\, executing and managing Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) within modern cloud infrastructures. VNFs can benefit from improved performance\, security\, and isolation\, enabling seamless deployment and execution of network functions closer to the edge by using WebAssembly.\nSecurity and Isolation of cloud-edge workloads: Novel technologies for workload isolation\, including hardware isolation such as secure enclaves\, Intel SGX and Arm TrustZone. Containerization platforms such as MicroVMs\, WebAssembly components and Docker containers. Capability-based access control such as WebAssembly System Interface.\nWorkload management on constrained devices and alternative architectures: Novel method- ologies for optimizing workload performance on devices with limited computational resources\, power\, and memory. This includes lightweight containerization\, efficient resource allocation\, adaptive scheduling\, and energy-aware computing strategies.\nFull-lifecycle management of services in the edge-cloud continuum: Comprehensive strate- gies for managing services throughout their lifecycle\, from deployment to maintenance and decommissioning\, across the edge-cloud continuum. SUMMARY:TARGET-X Webinar How to evaluate the Impact of 5G Use Cases in Industry: Insights into a Methodological Assessment Framework
DESCRIPTION:After the success of the first webinar “Robotics Deep Dive: Edge-Controlled Automation with Mobile Manipulation”\, the second TARGET-X webinar will be held on Thursday\, 8 May 2025\, from 14:00 to 15:30 CET. This session will focus on evaluating the impact of 5G use cases in industry\, with a particular emphasis on the Methodological Assessment Framework (MAF) developed within the TARGET-X project. \nWebinar Topic: How to Evaluate the Impact of 5G Use Cases in Industry: Insights into a Methodological Assessment FrameworkSpeaker: Maximilian Brochhaus\, Research Associate at Fraunhofer IPT and TARGET-X Work Package LeaderRegistration Link: https://s.fhg.de/target-x-MAF \nThe session will introduce the MAF\, a framework designed to assess the value of 5G-enabled use cases across industrial sectors. Developed through stakeholder feedback and practical application within the TARGET-X project\, the framework incorporates both User-KPI and User-KVI metrics to evaluate aspects such as sensor integration\, data accuracy\, and process stability. \nKey insights from the first phase of the project include a differentiation between explicit value propositions (immediate benefits) and implicit value propositions (long-term impacts). The framework has since been refined to further emphasize user experience and has received validation from industry stakeholders including 5G-ACIA\, 6G-IA\, and leading automotive companies. \nAs the project enters its final phase\, the MAF will be iteratively applied and improved based on findings from the 12 TARGET-X use cases\, with the aim of delivering actionable insights for businesses and supporting the broader adoption of 5G in industrial environments. \nParticipation is open\, and attendees are encouraged to share the invitation within their professional networks. \nFurther information and a schedule of upcoming webinars can be found at: https://target-x.eu/webinars/

SUMMARY:Understanding and Addressing 6G Controversies: Learning from the Past\, Building for the Future – 6G4Society Workshop
DESCRIPTION:About the webinar\nThis webinar is part of the 6G4Society project\, an SNS JU initiative dedicated to embedding societal and sustainable values into the development of 6G technology. 6G4Society brings a sociological perspective to technological development\, ensuring that future networks align with ethical\, inclusive\, and sustainable principles. By fostering a deeper understanding of public acceptance\, stakeholder concerns\, and the broader societal impacts of 6G\, the project aims to generate transformative discussions and informed decision-making. \nSign up for the webinar here! \nUnderstanding controversies is a critical step in promoting social acceptance. When a new technological system like 6G is introduced\, it does not emerge in a vacuum. Instead\, it reshapes existing structures\, creating both opportunities and challenges for different stakeholders. Identifying and analyzing controversies—examining stakeholder perspectives\, competing claims\, and underlying tensions—is fundamental to fostering trust\, mitigating conflict\, and ensuring a more inclusive and sustainable adoption of 6G. \nControversies are not simply obstacles; they are part of society’s negotiation process over technological change. They reflect broader discussions about governance\, power\, values\, and risk distribution. Engaging with these disputes allows us to anticipate concerns\, address misinformation\, and develop frameworks for a more responsible and widely accepted 6G deployment. \nThis webinar will explore: \n\nWhat we can learn from past controversies\, particularly surrounding 5G\, and how they might evolve with 6G;\nHow technological disputes arise and what role values\, economic interests\, and governance structures play;\nHow stakeholders can engage more effectively with the public to foster trust and transparency;\nHow controversy analysis can contribute to the development of an EU consensus framework for a sustainable and ethical 6G.\n\nBringing together expertise from Science and Technology Studies (STS) and the sociohistory of ICTs\, our panelists will provide insights into the patterns\, dynamics\, and governance of technology controversies and offer strategies for navigating them in 6G development. \nKey Speakers\n\nDr. Ana Delicado – Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences (ICS)\, University of Lisbon. Dr. Delicado specializes in the social dimensions of science and technology\, with a strong focus on public perception\, communication\, and participation in technological decision-making. Her work explores how controversies arise in emerging technologies and how public engagement can contribute to more inclusive and responsible innovation. In this webinar\, she will examine the role of scientific and technological controversies in shaping public trust\, policy and acceptance\, highlighting key lessons for 6G.\nAdrien Tournier – Doctoral Researcher in Sociohistory of Science and Technology\, Cnam\, Paris. Tournier’s research focuses on the historical development of telecommunications infrastructures\, particularly mobile networks\, and the socio-political controversies surrounding them. He investigates how past controversies around 3G\, 4G\, inform public debates and regulatory frameworks for 5G. His insights will help us understand the historical patterns of resistance to telecommunications infrastructure and what they mean for future network rollouts.\n\nTarget Audience\n\nResearchers and professionals in ICT and telecommunications\nSNS-JU projects interested in social acceptance and regulatory challenges\nPolicymakers and regulatory bodies working on future connectivity standards\nSocial scientists and scholars in Science\, Technology & Society (STS)\n\n  \nSign up for the webinar here!

SUMMARY:6GArch – 4th International Workshop on 6G Architecture
DESCRIPTION:WS-29: Workshop on 6G Architecture (6GArch)\n10th edition combined with 5GArch Workshop Series\nIn conjunction with IEEE Globecom 2024\, Cape Town\, South Africa\, 8-12 December 2024\, https://globecom2024.ieee-globecom.org/ \nThis workshop is organised by the SNS JU 6G Architecture work group. \n  \nObjectives – Call for Papers – Important Dates – Submit a Paper – Workshop Organisers/Committee – Program – Past Editions \n  \n1.    Objectives of the workshop (more here)\nSince the early generations\, mobile and wireless communications systems have played a crucial role in establishing essential connectivity. They have facilitated easy access to information anytime and anywhere\, leading to accelerated knowledge build-up and value-added actions across various sectors of society. The significance of wireless communication infrastructure has been further highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic\, as it has supported global stability and faster recovery by maintaining a stable technological environment and seamless societal connections despite quarantine regulations. \nRecognizing the critical role and importance of mobile and wireless communications\, advancements in the telecommunications ecosystem are captured through non-backward compatible features specified in a new generation of mobile and wireless communications systems. Transitioning from one generation to the next requires significant efforts\, and the justification for a new generation must consider technical\, societal\, and economic factors. These factors are interconnected\, meaning that advancements in any of these areas can accelerate the overall process. For example\, the need to explore new business areas also entails supporting a diverse set of requirements. \nIn this context\, 3GPP standardization has progressed rapidly\, and more 5G system enhancements are reaching maturity with the completion of Release 17\, while Release 18 is marking the start of 5G-Advanced. Release 19 is underway to provide a guidance on what future the 6G system needs to be capable of\, and Release 20 is in preparation. At the same time\, the Smart Networks and Services (SNS JU) in Europe\, under the Horizon Europe program for Research and Innovation\, has started to date more than 60 project in Phases 1 and 2\, and more projects are underway. The European SNS JU program is a joint initiative between the private and the public side and focuses on 5G-Advanced and 6G. \nTo address the architectural evolution towards 6G\, the SNS 6G Architecture Working Group (WG) has evolved from the 5G PPP Architecture WG\, which has issued several white papers and an open-access book\, with the latest one specifically focusing on this workshop’s topics. The workshop aims to discuss novel key architectural innovations required for future 6G mobile telecommunications networks. It also provides a platform for projects working on long-term innovations and formulating research items under the 6G theme to share their visions\, requirements\, and architectural considerations for future mobile systems. \nThe thematic topics of the workshop revolve around technology enablers and design recommendations\, facilitating the transition from 5G-Advanced towards a fully-fledged 6G architecture. These topics will encompass areas such as network infrastructure\, spectrum utilization\, connectivity\, scalability\, sustainability\, security\, as well as joint/integrated communication and sensing\, among others. The workshop will source from the very vibrant SNS JU research community that is already working on the topics\, providing reference architectural solutions. \nIn summary\, the rapid progress in mobile telecommunications has demonstrated their crucial role in establishing connectivity and fostering knowledge sharing. The ongoing efforts in 5G standardization\, the SNS JU projects (and previously the 5G PPP projects)\, and the upcoming focus on 5G-Advanced and 6G research indicate the industry’s dedication to advancing mobile telecommunications systems. But two years on and we have seen the increased momentum and excitement around the 6G industry which is currently on track to reach a tremendous value of $46.20 billion by 2033. And with the first specifications of 6G detailed in 3GPP’s Release 19 as early as next year\, it’s time for communication service providers (CSPs) to reflect on what progress has been made so far and what needs to be done to foster in the new connectivity ecosystem. Join Fierce Network’s 6G Evolution Summit where we will invite industry leaders to discuss the latest topics and developments in the 6G discussion.

SUMMARY:Embracing Key Values and Key Values Indicators: How can SNS projects drive sustainable change? An interactive workshop Jointly Organised by 6G4SOCIETY and FIDAL
DESCRIPTION:Event Details\n\nWhat: Workshop based on interactive dialogue and active contributions from participants.\nWho: Projects working on KVIs\nDate & Time: Friday 25th October\, 10h00-12h30\, Online\nRegistration form: https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/KviWS2024\n\n⇒ FLYER\nIntroduction:\nAs we are moving towards 6G\, the interaction of humans with technologies is expected to bring unprecedented changes to the way people live and interact. By ensuring societal\, environmental and economic sustainability are addressed from the very early development of 6G\, the ambition of the SNS JU projects is to maximise benefits for individuals\, communities and businesses. This requires projects to anticipate and articulate how\, realistically and practically\, 6G can create positive impact at several levels. Currently\, projects are working with Key Value Indicators (KVIs) to do so. \nThe main goal of this workshop is to explore 1) how SNS projects are working with KVIs to address these positive impacts\, 2) challenges and best practices in defining and implementing KVIs\, and 3) what are the expected outcomes from using KVIs. The idea is to do this via interactive dialogues and active contributions from partners of ongoing SNS projects that are actively working on KVIs. \nThis workshop is the first in a series of workshops and webinars on 6G and Sustainability to be organised in collaboration with 6G4Society. This series will take on topics\, such as: \n\nBuilding consensus on the definitions of a select set of Key Values and related indicators (e.g. inclusivity\, circular economy)\, with external experts and vertical representatives.\nExploring approaches to validating indicators to value in ways that build public trust.\nConsidering the potential for interdependent indicators from different areas of sustainability (e.g.\, energy efficiency with inclusivity)\, with external experts.\nWorking with and moving beyond trade-offs.\n\nAbout this Workshop:\nObjectives: \n\nGather current approaches to identifying relevant KVIs and objectives within to build a map of how and why different projects (e.g. stream B\, C\, D) approach value prioritisation\,\nCollect challenges in defining and implementing KVIs to assess further support needs\,\nShare what works well in projects working with KVIs to collect best practices\,\nClarify the expected impacts of KVI use.\n\n \nFormat: \n15 min: Introductory Presentations (6G4S and FIDAL)\nSetting the scene. Short introduction of 6G4SOCIETY and its role as a CSA in ensuring that societal and sustainable values are embedded in the development of 6G; short overview of the experience in FIDAL in working with KVIs. \n20 min: Lightning Talks on single biggest challenge and best practice so far in projects\nInformal Roundtable. Each project will be given 2 minutes to share these two points as highlights. \n35 min: Interactive Session 1: Current approaches and challenges\nRepresentatives from SNS projects will work in small breakout groups via collaborative activities to share approaches and challenges with the goal of aligning on the main priorities to produce a view of what has been working well and where more work is needed. \n5 min: Break \n35 min: Interactive Session 2: What works well and KVI impact\nContinuing in small breakout groups\, projects will share what has worked well and collect projects’ understanding of the scope and scale of KVI impact\, seeking to build agreement about how KVIs can be used in the future. \n30 min: Sharing Results from Breakout Session in Plenary \n10 min: Wrap Up and Conclusion \nFor each active session\, participants will be allocated to a small breakout group. Each group will have a moderator that will guide the discussion and that will assign a rapporteur for the group. The rapporteur will report the key discussion points back to the Plenary. \nOutcomes:\nA short paper highlighting trends within projects\, best practices\, agreed definitions\, and gaps that need addressing. These outcomes will inform the work in the remainder of the series. \nPreparation Before Workshop:\nWe will send out a small set of discussion points to come prepared to discuss and a short poll to organise contributions and gather insights more effectively. No formal presentation preparation is needed. Some examples of questions that will be discussed: \n\nHow are starting values prioritised in projects?\nWho should use the results of KVIs\, and for what?\nWhat are the priority challenges projects are facing in defining KVIs?\nHow should KVIs support projects in addressing the societal and sustainability dimensions of technology in projects?\n\nTarget audience:\nWe welcome all interested participants to join us in this workshop. We greatly encourage those responsible for KVI development within SNS projects to participate during the breakout sessions to contribute to a rich and productive discussion output.
