Summary of 5G User Workshop on RAN Rel-18 |
![]() |
![]() The 5G User Workshop on 23 June 2021 was designed to help industry verticals prepare ahead for Release 18 in 3GPP Radio Access Network technical specification working groups. Organised by 5G-IA, 5GAA, 5G-ACIA and PSCE, the workshop brought together a wide range of associations, spanning automotive, broadcasting and media, energy and utilities, healthcare, manufacturing, maritime, rail and satellite communications as an enabler for verticals. The workshop opened with a fireside chat with newly elected RAN Chair, Wanshi Chen, on Advanced 5G as topics are being define for standardisation in Release 18, thereby opening up opportunities for consensus-driven inputs. Panellists from each association then took the floor to present their priority requirements: Maxime Flament (CTO, 5GAA), Michael Bahr (Siemens and 5G-ACIA), David Vargas (BBC and 5G-MAG), Julian Stafford (technical director of EUTC) supported by former SA TSG Chair Eric Guttman (Samsung), Nicolas Chuberre (Thales Alenia Space and member of ESOA), Ingo Wendler (UIC) and Hyhounee Koo (IALA). Inputs from 5G PPP came from 5G-SOLUTIONS with Andrea Di Giglio (Telecom Italia SpA) presenting living labs use cases using EU-funded 5G network infrastructures, 5G-EVE and 5G-VINNI. Other examples of EU leadership came from the French SME, Novamint, whose work in 3GPP is supporting multiple verticals while Mathew Webb from Huawei is a RAN specialist presented work on Passive IoT, which is applicable to diverse verticals. Overall, the workshop showcased EU-led public and private investments in 5G standardisation in a truly global context. Watch the video recording here: |

![]() It then gives a deep dive on new requirements from verticals, spanning automotive (5GAA), manufacturing (5G-ACIA), critical communications and public safety (TCCA with PSCE), broadcasting and media (5G-MAG), satellite (ESOA), rail (UIC), maritime (IALA) and energy (EUTC). 5G-SOLUTIONS came on board as a 5G PPP project supporting verticals with the 5G-EVE and 5G-VINNI 5G network infrastructures alongside RAN specialists doing standardisation work applicable to multiple verticals. The video also gives some tips and tricks for verticals on why to join 3GPP and how to stay the course. The workshop was organised by 3GPP MRPs: 5G-IA, 5GAA, 5G-ACIA and PSCE. The video is featured on the 5G PPP web site video channel (https://smart-networks.europa.eu/video/) and on the 5G PPP YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY8mTTwrDoMl35vGkiKq1Eg). |

5G-MAG joins 5G User Forum |
![]() |
The number of industry verticals joining 3GPP has grown exponentially in recent years as more companies see the value 5G creates in terms of driving digital transformation as efficiently as possible.
Run by a group of market representation partners in 3GPP, the 5G User Forum was quick to see the value of supporting verticals in contributing to 5G standardisation when it hosted its first event back in early 2019. Roll on to 2021 and the Forum has grown into a global community connecting verticals and the telecom industry to lower barriers and drive common and priority requirements. Run by the 5G Infrastructure Association (5G-IA), 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA), Public Safety Communications Europe (PSCE), the Forum organises timely deep dives into new standardisation work, where verticals can get involved in the all-important drive around global standards. The Forum has now welcomed on board the 5G Media Action group, “with the development of 5G and the paradigm shift with respect to industry engagement, new services and business opportunities in many market sectors, we believe that the media industry is one of those where benefits along the entire value chain can be expected”, says 5G-MAG Chair, Antonio Arcidiacono. The Forum is key to keeping companies up to date on 5G technologies and supporting coordination of standards globally. “Global standards benefit everyone in industry. We have not only worked towards lowering entry barriers for industry verticals but have also helped them build consensus by focusing on their common and priority requirements”, says Stephanie Parker, Vice Chair of the 5G-IA Pre-Standardization Working Group and 5G User Forum. Antonio Arcidiacono concludes, “with 5G-MAG, the media and ICT industries have an opportunity to collaborate on the implementation of 5G to face the challenges and needs of the global media landscape”. ### About 5G-MAG The 5G Media Action Group, https://www.5g-mag.com/, is an association bridging the global media and ICT industries. Our members, drawn from the entire value chain, work together to understand and shape future technologies for media production, contribution and distribution. We analyse what 3GPP standards can do for media; define new use cases and applications for the technologies coming to the market; develop requirements to improve 5G specifications; and offer a collaborative framework to foster discussion, consensus towards standardisation and a market-driven implementation of the 5G specifications for media. |

EAI CROWNCOM 2021 |
![]() |
Shijiazhuang, China – December 10-12
Following the success of last edition, the main scope of CROWNCOM 2021 is on innovations and applications with the cognitive-based solutions in the context of 5G and beyond. Cognitive Radio and Sharing mechanisms have been considered for sub 6GHz bands broadband systems mainly. Hotspot research topics on Cognitive Radio in various contexts include spectrum sharing, dynamic spectrum access, increased system flexibility through access to rich context information, virtualization and management, etc. With the development of intelligent algorithms, the new 5G paradigm and its expected evolutions into 6G raised unprecedented expectations in terms of broadband services, latency and convergence of broadband systems with IoT networks. In this context, CROWNCOM 2021 will encompass all research aspects related to 5G and beyond systems that may benefit from the introduction of cognitive mechanisms, including most recent innovations, trends, examples of state-of-the-art industrial deployments, contributions to standards and policies. Besides, to provide a forum for the world-class researchers to gather and share their research achievements and ideas, all papers related to communication signal processing, satellite communications and networking, aerial communications networking and protocols, IoT and IoE, electronic countermeasures, and artificial intelligence are solicited. EAI CROWNCOM 2021 will be held by Hebei Normal University in Shijiazhuang City, capital of the Hebei Province. Shijiazhuang City is ‘National Advanced City of Science and Education’, with strong scientific and technological capability. Starting from 2020, 5G will be commercially available on a large scale, and the coverage of 5G networks in cities and hot spots will be improved, gradually extending to rural areas. In Shijiazhuang, there are 36 scenic areas of Class A and 33 demonstration sites for industrial and agricultural tourism. The people of Shijiazhuang welcome friends from all over the world.
