On 18-19 of October, 5G Techritory 2023 took place for the 6th edition in Riga, Latvia and online.

5G Techritory 2023 featured two Memorandums of Understanding signed, 18 co-creation events focusing on 5G practicalities, not to even mention the 32 panels and keynote speeches. It gathered 1667 participants from 77 countries and 146 speakers.

Erzsébet Fitori, SNS JU Executive Director, was one of the principal speakers, along with Rolf Werner Head of Europe for Nokia, Audrey Plonk, Head of the Digital Economy Policy Division at OECD, Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine and Seizo Onoe, Director of Telecommunication Standardization Bureau of ITU.

Many SNS projects were also there. In particular, the SNS ICE project organized three co-creation sessions and a thought-provoking panel discussion. These co creation sessions brought together experts of varied backgrounds working on common goals which were quite diverse and focused on important key actions covering: “National Initiatives”, “5G for sustainability, the future role of 6G” and “5G for verticals: from large scale trials to adoption, driving economic value in Europe”.

Other discussions revolved around topics such as Metaverse, AI, Digitalization, Connectivity for Defence, Indoor 5G, Cybersecurity, IOT, 6G, Open RAN, Transport’s digitalization, Quantum computing…

10th Global 5G Event & 6G Global Events

The global 5G event serves as a significant platform for sharing the latest trends in 5G achievements and discussing various topics related to mobile communication, global unified B5G technology standards, and industrial ecosystems. The event also covered discussions on 6G issues, in addition to 5G.

The 10th issue was held in South Korea, on October 30 and 31, 2023. Over the course of one and half days, six sessions were conducted, focusing on Regional Policies for 5G/6G, 5G Business Model and Monetization, Evolution of 5G device and solutions, 5G+6G-Evolution of 5G Network towards 6G, Future service, technology, and socio-economic trends for 6G. A total of 29 invited speakers delivered excellent presentations during these sessions. Furthermore, a special session on 5G specialized Network and applications in Korea was organized by KT, LG Electronics, and ETRI.

Europe was represented by pre-recoded video presentations from Peter Stuckmann, DG CNECT, Emanuel Dotaro and Hanne-Stine Hallingby, SNS OPS and Alex Kaloxylos, 6G-IA with physical presence.

France-Ireland Cooperation on Beyond 5G & 6G Research and Innovation

France-Ireland Cooperation on Beyond 5G and 6G Research and Innovation held a two-part online event dedicated to exploring research and innovation cooperation opportunities between Ireland and France in the Smart Network and Services Joint Undertaking. 

Day 1 session was held on 8th November 2023. Day 1 was a high-level session introducing the collaboration and presenting the capabilities and opportunities for collaboration between Ireland and France in the SNS-JU calls, including the traditional RIAs, IA, and other opportunities available in Stream C and D Financial Support to Third Party (FSTP) open calls. SNS OPS partners, Olivier Audouin of Bell labs France, Nokia gave a presentation on Nokia 5G/6G R&I and Ecosystem and James Clarke of SETU (and also SNS OPS) made a presentation on all the upcoming opportunities of the Stream C and Stream D FSTP open calls for the participants.

Day 2 session was held on 15th November 2023. Day 2 was dedicated to allowing researchers and innovators to conduct networking, pitching sessions and brainstorming discussions on future proposals. The goal was for French and Irish researchers and innovators to meet up and connect in relevant breakout rooms to discuss and initiate France – Ireland cooperation on Beyond 5G and 6G research and innovation calls, especially cooperation in the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) 2024 Call and in other relevant French/Irish Calls that were presented during the Day 1 webinar on 8th November. Prior to opening the breakout rooms, a presentation on the SNS JU 2024 Call topics was given by Javier Albares Bueno, SNS JU to kick off the discussions.

SNS-R&I-WP-2024-Briefing-Session

The SNS JU has published its SNS R&I Work Programme 2024 and prepared its Third Call. The Call for proposals will open in January 2024  – with a submission date ~ mid-April 2024.

The SNS JU Office and the 6G IA would now like to introduce the SNS JU Call for Proposals 2024 on 11 th of December 2023, at 13:00 to 14:00 CET,  through a Webinar to present the context and explain the topics. The presentations below will elaborate the ambitions and focus of the call topics.

The intention of this webinar is to give an initial overview of the SNS JU activities and call criteria (including funding) to assist those interested in submitting a proposal on Smart Networks and Services.

BEGREEN published an Analysis Latency-Critical Interfaces and Overview of Time Sensitive Networking Solutions

In September, a new publication by the team on ‘Analysis of Latency-Critical Interfaces and Overview of Time Sensitive Networking Solutions’ in ORAN architecture. The article, published by SNS BeGREEN Project partner i2CAT Foundation, discussed the most relevant Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) standards that may bring compelling benefits to O-RAN, i.e., IEEE 802.1CM, IEEE 802.1Qbu, and IEEE 802.1Qbv; for providing determinism over cost-efficient networks.

On 25th-27th of October, Professor Christos Verikoukis, the project coordinator, represented 6GBRICKS at the European Big Data Value Forum, which took place in Valencia, Spain.

On 7th– 9th of November, the Smart City Expo World Congress 2023 (#scewc23) took place in Barcelona, a global epicenter for urban innovation. The 6GBRICKS Project, alongside with ADROIT6G and ACCC AC3, showcased at IQU’s booth, demonstrated how intelligent connectivity is paving the way for a seamlessly connected world.

ADROIT6G was presented during SCEWC23 in Barcelona, hosted by Iquadrat’s booth from November 7-9, 2023. The Smart City Expo World Congress is the world’s biggest and most influential event on urban innovation. They connect leaders from the most innovative companies, governments, and organizations to move cities towards a better future.

ACROSS in 5G TECHRITORY

On 18th and 19th October 2023 ACROSS (Automated zero-touch cross layer provisioning framework for 5G and beyond vertical services), the research and innovation project, participated in 5G Techritory. The 5G TECHRITORY platform is an initiative that unites key players, aiming to build a robust and cohesive 5G ecosystem in Europe and beyond. The event was held in a “phygital” format, combining physical presence in Riga, Latvia, with online streaming to a global audience, including speakers and VIP guests.

FIDAL Open Call – September 2023

Project FIDAL launched its first Open Call on 15th September this year. Interested applicants could learn more about the opportunity during the online webinars organized by the project on 5th October and 2nd November. The webinars provided information on the application process, examples of testbeds and network applications and introduced concepts and requirements for the Key Value Indicators.

The purpose of the Open Call is twofold.

𝗢𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝟭 – New infrastructures and functionalities (extensions): Enlarge and make the 6G-SANDBOX experimental infrastructure ready for advanced experimentation in upcoming project open calls for experimentation. New 6G features and functionalities should be integrated into the 6G-SANDBOX infrastructure.
𝗢𝗣𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝟮 – Innovative experiments: Initiate first funded innovative experiments on the 6G-SANDBOX infrastructure. Innovative 6G use cases and KPI measurements are expected to use the 6G-SANDBOX infrastructure.

ETHER project advancing RAN and 3 pilot cases validation

ETHER project is going to bring about advancements in Radio Access Networking and Networking in 6G communication networks. These advancements will be validated across 3 of its use cases. A video featuring ETHER’s coordinator Dr. Konstantinos Ntontin, University of Luxembourg, and Dr. Rita Santiago, Ubiwhere, is available to understand the advancement of the project.

CONFIDENTIAL6G introduced at 1ST SUMMIT on security and privacy in future mobile networks (SECURENET) 2023

The SECURENET 2023 Summit, was an event that focused on the security and privacy of future mobile networks, including the prospects of 6G. Project partner Madhusanka Liyanage, from the University College Dublin (UCD), and his Netslab (https://netslab.ucd.ie/) team had organized the #SECURENET 2023 Summit in 11th of September. He introduced our Confidential6G project at a high level, highlighting the importance of secure communication in the next generation of mobile networks.

On 15th of November, the coordinator Gilberto Berardinelli presented the vision of the 6G-SHINE project at the 2023 IEEE Future Networks World Forum, Symposium on Vision and Facts on 6G and Future Networks in Europe, held in Baltimore, USA.

SUPERIOT AT FOURTH VISIONS FOR FUTURE COMMUNICATIONS SUMMIT

On 7th to 8th of November, SUPERIOT partner INESC TEC participated in the Fourth Visions for Future Communications Summit focused on Research Beyond 6G, in Lisbon, Portugal. SUPERIOT have been introduced as an example of some ongoing INESC TEC projects that are catalyzers of beyond-6G research.

TrialsNet’s Second Open Call Webinar on December the 5th

On 13th of November, TrialsNet’s announced that after the first Open Call Webinar, a second webinar will be held on December 5, 2023. It will focus on presenting the projects’ infrastructures and the KPIs/KVIs framework.

6G-XR was present at EBDVF 2023

On 25th to 27th of October, EBDVF 2023 took place in Valencia, Spain. 6G-XR partners brought their expertise and perspectives in two sessions: “Metaverse Enablers: moving towards virtual worlds” part 1 and 2. The Metaverse and its expected positive impact on various aspects of society was a hot topic of discussion in the research and industry ecosystem for some time.

PREDICT-6G and DESIRE-6G in MobiHoc 2023

PREDICT-6G and DESIRE6G co-organised the “6G Programmable Deterministic Networking with AI” workshop (6G-PDN)” on the 23 of October 2023, at MobiHoc 2023 (Washington  DC, United States).

The workshop was structured along three key topics: “Deterministic Communications” and “Deep Network Programmability”, and “Transforming Networking with AI”, with the outstanding keynotes on  “Extreme Reconfigurability for 6G: From Programmable Wireless Networks to Programmable Environments” by Professor Kaushik Chowdhury, Northeastern University and “Next Generation Hybrid Network (core, 5G/6G, non-terrestrial) Automation: Integrated Model-Based and Data-Driven Systems Engineering” by Professor Baras, University of Maryland.

Some of the main takeaways of the workshop include the definition of digital twins, AI and sensing as key areas where deterministic and programmable networks can work together to achieve extreme KPIs.
