Progress in 6G Research Initiatives across EU Member States: New Report Highlights

Brussels, June 2026 – The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) has published its 2024/2025 overview of major national 6G Initiatives across several EU Member States.

Produced at the request of the States Representatives Group (SRG) – the SNS JU’s advisory body composed of national delegates from EU Member States and Associated Countries to Horizon Europe – this latest edition provides selected insights on the 6G research and innovation programmes across eight EU Member States: the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, France, Finland, Germany, Sweden, and Ireland.

Building on the 2023 edition, this report provides updated insights into funding strategies, research priorities, and organisational frameworks, with a particular emphasis on standardisation and sustainability, two critical focus areas for this year’s analysis. It also identifies key opportunities for deeper cross-border cooperation, ensuring alignment with Europe’s broader digital strategy under the SNS JU.

The report underscores Europe’s commitment to technological leadership, sustainability, and societal impact, while identifying pathways to deepen cooperation among national initiatives. As global competition in 6G intensifies, alignment with Europe’s broader digital strategy, under the SNS JU, remains a priority.

As Sarmīte Mickeviča, SRG Chair (Latvia), emphasises: “This report underscores the growing strength of Member State cooperation and our shared commitment to a European vision for next-generation networks. Beyond substantial investments in 6G research, we see a clear determination to collaborate, exchange knowledge, and align strategies. Sustainability is no longer an afterthought but a core principle, our networks must be energy-efficient, resilient, and socially relevant. The SRG will continue to foster dialogue and joint action, ensuring Europe’s 6G journey balances technological ambition with responsibility.”

Hakima Chaouchi, SRG Vice-Chair (France)“Strengthening Europe’s influence on 6G relies on a shared commitment to aligning national and European priorities, thereby maximizing our impact on international standardization. Through this partnership, we can effectively integrate European values, societal expectations, and strategic interests into global standards. Ultimately, translating these joint research and innovation efforts into market leadership is essential for maintaining an active, influential presence in global standard-setting.”
