Summary of Experiments and Implementations

Results Achieved by Third Parties Involved in SNS JU Projects through the Mechanism of Cascading Funding – Open Calls

Introduction

Cascading funding is a financial support model used for innovation projects. Under this approach, the European Union facilitates access to funding for SMEs, start-ups, and other smaller entities developing innovative products and services. The aim is to optimise the distribution of resources and stimulate the growth of technological and research initiatives across various sectors.

Within the SNS Programme, several projects presented below have been implementing open calls.

In the following, we present a summary of experiments and implementations conducted within the scope of the SNS JU Programme. This page is considered a living document and will be updated regularly.

In the context of the open calls, funds are channelled through a main entity that manages the funding and is then distributed to final beneficiaries through specific calls for proposals. The “main entities” are usually EU-funded projects, which, among other research and innovation activities, also organise the open calls in the work plan. The final beneficiaries of the open calls are typically projects or entities seeking support for the development of innovative technologies, applied research, or the improvement of existing processes.

The principle of the open calls / cascaded funding is distinguished by its ability to simplify the process of accessing funding and ensure that funds are used effectively. In the SNS Programme, the funding range is typically between 50,000€ – 200,000€.

Cascading Grants/third-party funding are planned for the following SNS Programme actions:

  • SNS-STREAM-C, 20 % of the budget reserved for open calls/third-party financing
  • SNS-STREAM-D, 40 % of the budget is reserved for open calls/third-party financing

Stream C focuses on SNS Enablers and Proof of Concepts (PoCs) used to develop experimental infrastructure(s), ideally aiming at being used during later phases of the SNS. On the other hand, Stream D aims at large-scale SNS trials and pilots with verticals, including the required infrastructure, where the aim is to explore and demonstrate technologies and advanced applications and services in vertical sectors. Thus, in both cases, the involvement of third parties is crucial to validate and improve the provided 6G experimental infrastructures, where the mechanism of the open calls plays a significant role.

Until now, 259 Open Call projects have been funded in the scope of the Cascading Funding within the SNS JU Programme.

The open call projects involved 347 stakeholders, so-called third parties, funded by the parent projects as presented below.

Participation of different types of organisations along the SNS JU parent projects is presented below.
