SNS Webinar “SNS-OPS Questionnaire Results of Call 1 & 2 SNS Projects”

On 27 June 2024, took place the Webinar “SNS-OPS Questionnaire Results of Call 1 & 2 SNS Projects”.

The SNS-OPS Coordination & Support Action project, tasked with supporting the projects’ work and promoting the key messages of the SNS Joint Undertaking, has conducted an extensive survey during the first semester of 2024 to obtain additional information about each project’s technical aspects, vision, approach and achievements.

The goal of this survey was to understand better the work planned to be performed in each call 2 project, the combined challenges with Call 2 projects, and the progress achieved so far by Call 1 projects.

The questionnaire highlighted the excellent performance and achievements of the 35 Call 1 SNS projects, with numerous contributions to events, publications and technological advances.

The SNS Standard Tracker Online Platform is out

The 6G Smart Networks and Services Industry Association (6G-IA) Pre-Standardization Working Group in collaboration with the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) Research and Innovation projects and the SNS-OPS CSA project are proud to present the Standards Tracker online platform.

The Standards Tracker online platform is designed to help researchers in the SNS JU R&I community navigate the 5G/6G standardisation landscape, understand the timing, methods, and rationale for their contributions, and stay updated with relevant news from standardisation committees. By providing a comprehensive view of key stakeholders and contributions, the Standards Tracker supports the development of a European standardisation roadmap, aligning with the goals of the SNS JU Office and supporting vertical industries with technical requirements.

The SNS JU shared it First Annual Activity Report (AAR) with the European Institutions

On 1 July 2024, the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) shared its first Annual Activity Report (AAR) with the European Institutions.

The AAR is an important document as it contains the SNS JU achievements over 2023.

Indeed, 2023 marked important milestones for the Smart Networks and Services Community and the Joint Undertaking. The SNS JU became a financially autonomous EU body and demonstrated continued commitment to delivering on Europe’s ambitions with regard to technological advancement and leadership, anchored in partnership between the European Commission, the 6G Industry Association and collaboration with Member States, international partners and a broad base of stakeholders. The SNS JU has made good progress towards its key objectives, and the European research and innovation initiative towards a full 6G system has advanced to its second phase.

2nd consultation on the SNS Working Programme 2025 Draft V2.0 Released to 6G-IA Members

On 22 July 2024, the SNS Working Programme draft V2.0 was released to 6G-IA members, the second consultation on this draft runs from 23 July to 30 August 2024.

6G4Society Citizen Survey

The 6G4Society project is a Coordination and Support Action aimed at ensuring that societal and sustainable values are properly embedded into the development of 6G technology, bringing a sociological perspective to technological development.

Two of 6G4Society’s goals are to understand aspects influencing public acceptance of 6G and to engage the public to build social acceptance of the new generation technology. To do so, the project launched in May 2024 its Citizen Survey, a unique opportunity for European citizens to share their experiences and opinions about current 5G technology and the upcoming transition to 6G. The aim of the Citizen Survey is to gather this input to guide European Union policymakers and technology providers toward developing more inclusive and sustainable communication networks.

The survey only takes 7 minutes to complete, and it’s available in English, French, Italian, and Spanish.

IEEE MEDITCOM 2024

IEEE MeditCom 2024 took place in Madrid, Spain on 8-11 July 2024. IEEE MeditCom is the conference of the IEEE Communications Society serving the Mediterranean area and surrounding countries. It gathers visionary researchers in academia and industry from all over the world to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. IEEE MeditCom features a comprehensive and timely technical program, addressing the hottest topics in the areas of communications and networking.

The paper related to VERGE work titled “XAI-driven Model Design for Resource Utilization Forecasting in Cloud-native 6G Networks” by L. Liatsas, G. Kibalya, A. Antonopoulos was presented in the conference.

The SNS JU phase 2 project 6G-TWIN was introduced by Chris Murphy (VIAVI Solution) during its keynote. Chris closed his talk with some material on 6G-TWIN and how this is already laying the foundation for digital twin to empower the operational networks with a focus on reactive and predictive network digital twin to enable tele-operated driving and energy saving use cases.

Berlin 6G Conference 2024

The Annual Networking Event of the German 6G Program – organized by the 6G Platform Germany happened at the Berlin Congress Center (BCC), on 2-4 July 2024.

The progress of Hexa-X-II has been highlighted during a talk titled “Update from Hexa-X-II and 6G Design Principles”.

The event has been the occasion for OPTI-6G to published its first flyer resuming the project overview, challenges and objectives.

International Conference on Transparent Optical Network 2024

The National Institute of Telecommunications, former Department of Transmission and Optical Technologies in Warsaw, together with DEI – Dipartimento di Ingegneria Elettrica e dell’Informazione of Politecnico di Bari, and the IEEE Photonics Society Poland Chapter organised the 24th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks ICTON 2024 in Bari, Italy on 14-18 July 2024. The scope of the Conference and co-located events is focused on the applications of transparent and all-optical technologies in telecommunications, computing, sensing, and quantum applications.

The SEASON project co-organised with ALLEGRO EU the Women in Telecommunication and Optical Networks (WeInTel) workshop.

DESIRE6G was represented at the event through the demonsstration of Andrea Sgambelluri on “Augmented Reality App with AI-based Pervasive Latency Monitoring of RAN and Programmable Metro Packet-Optical Networks”.

Luis Miguel Contreras from Telefonica presented the paper “Reliability in deterministic networks: Comparison of FRER (TSN) and PREOF (DetNet)”, related to the research carried out within PREDICT-6G.

INTERACT 5th Training School: AI/ML for 6G Communication Networks (and Beyond)

The “AI/ML for 6G Communication Networks (and Beyond)” Training School took place on 1st July 2024 in Barcelona, Spain at the premises of the Centre Tecnològic de Telecommunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC).

The training school covered a selection of topics about AI and ML for 6G communications networks, featuring keynote and tutorial lectures by renowned researchers from academia and industry, focused presentations on recent advances in these research fields and hands-on sessions.

Webinar promoting joint White Paper on the role of 6G in agriculture

The NCSR Demokritos Summer School 2024, held for the 59th year took place on 8-12 July 2024 in Athens, Greece.

The event focused on Information Technology and telecommunications, Nanotechnology and Modern Materials, Energy, and Environment Safety, providing a dynamic platform for researchers and postgraduate students to exchange insights, forge new partnerships, and explore cutting-edge innovations.

The Front Research Group of NCSRD actively engaged researchers and postgraduate students in discussions about SUNRISE-6G and SAFE-6G objectives and 6G experimentation during the event’s poster session.

Dr. Harilaos Koumaras, head of FRONT Research Group and Leader of Athens 6G testbed, stated: “We had the opportunity to share SUNRISE-6G and SAFE-6G’s visions for 6G experimentation with young researchers and postgraduate students, who need access to 6G experimentation testbeds for performing their research. SUNRISE-6G and SAFE-6G, as pan-European federated B5G/6G experimentation facilities, can meet this need by offering applied testing and experimentation.”

Maria Christopoulou, PRIVATEER‘s Technical Manager, gave a talk on “Privacy-first Security Enablers for 6G Networks”. Maria presented aspects of privacy-first approaches to 6G security and shared on-going activities within PRIVATEER, focusing on the development of security enablers and the Release A of the PRIVATEER Framework.

Desire-6G and Predict-6G – Call for papers for Special Issue of the IEEE Network Magazine

The DESIRE6G and PREDICT-6G projects are involved in the organization of a Special Issue of the IEEE Network magazine on Deterministic, Reliable, Resilient and Programmable Networks for 6G.

The SI welcomes submissions from both academic and industry researchers, contributing to the progress of 6G networking research and development. Its scope includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:

VERGE @ ISWCS 24 & IEEE CONECCT 24

VERGE has represented at the ISWCS’24 conference, which took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 14-17 July with the paper “Low Layer Functional Split Management in 5G and Beyond: Architecture and Self-adaptation”. David Campoy (UPC) presented the paper, discussing an example of VERGE’s AI4Edge portfolio of solutions (video available here).

VERGE has been represented at the IEEE CONECCT 2024 conference, which took place in Bangalore, India on 12-14 July with the paper “Sample-Efficient Blockage Prediction and Handover Using Causal Reinforcement Learning” by partners from Ericsson (Sweden) L. Kanagamani, J. Sadasivan and S. Banerjee.

6G-SANDBOX Open Calls Updates & MoU Signed

On 4 July 6G-SANDBOX announced its 3rd Open Call for Innovative Experiments with feasibility check deadline on 5 September 2024 at 17:00 and Submission deadline on 19 September 2024.

On 9 July 6G-SANDBOX announced the results of its 2nd Open Call with some information in form of graphics available here.

On 17 July, under the project leadership of Keysight, 6G-SANDBOX signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Universiti Malaya to advance innovation in the field of 6G networks. This is the second major MoU that 6G SANDBOX has signed with an Asian organization to promote global cooperation for 6G research.

6G-TWIN @ Nexus 2050 Luxembourg

The 6G-TWIN coordinator Sébastien Faye from LIST, delivered a speech about the myths and realities of 6G and 6G-TWIN during a side event of MyConnectivity G.I.E., organised as part of Nexus2050 Luxembourg. The session gathered more than a hundred participants, including representatives from the project partners Proximus and VIAVI.

The project was also promoted through the exhibition area, together with additional LIST’s digital projects, related to Blockchain and AI

For its inaugural edition, Nexus 2050 focused on artificial intelligence, sustainability, cybersecurity, financial technology, as well as talent attraction and development.

6G-BRICKS is Opening its 2nd Call in Vertical Applications & Experimentation XAPPS

______

6G-BRICKS announced its 2nd Open Call in Vertical Applications & Experimentation XAPPS. The project will organize two rounds of open calls to select up to 14-26 sub-projects for the roll-out of 3rd party experiments on 6G-BRICKS experimental infrastructure. A total of € 1.680.906 corresponding to 20% of the project’s total budget, will be provided in the form of lump sum funding of up to €120.000 with max €60.000 per beneficiary. The objective of the Open Calls is to validate the capabilities, functionalities and performance of the 6GBRICKS experimental facility in extended domains which will complement those of the internal Use Cases.

Feasibility Check: 1 July-11 October 2024

Final Submission Deadline:  29 November 2024

Proposals for covering, but not limited:

  1. Vertical applications from various domains (e.g., PPDR, media, eHealth, transportation, Industry 4.0) to validate the 6G-BRICKS testbeds in terms of:

    • Intent-driven service deployment

6G-PATH Participation in Events

During end June and July, the 6G-PATH project participated in three events.

6G-PATH participated in the 20th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations – AIAI 2024, held from 27-30 June 2024 at the Ionian University, Corfu, Greece. In particular, 6G-PATH participated in the 9th 5G-PINE (“Putting Intelligence to the Network Edge”) Workshop, held in conjunction with AIAI 2024, where five EU-funded Horizon projects (6G-PATH, NANCY, Smart5Grid, AMBITIOUS and DATAMITE) joined efforts towards creating an interactive context for discussing the evolution towards B5G/6G via dedicated use cases and corresponding infrastructures.

On 28 June, the project partners, FOKUS and Charité, presented a significant paper at the 4th IEEE International Conference on ICT Solutions for eHealth (ICTS4eHealth 2024). The paper, titled “5G Wound Management System for Remote Areas”, was featured under the ‘Infrastructure Optimization for eHealth Applications’ session. This research showcases a Beyond 5G solution design specifically for the telehealth use case of wound management within the 6G-PATH project.

On 4 July, the project’s University of Bradford partner hosted the Annual ICT4D North (of England) Workshop 2024, where the 6G-PATH project was showcased.

Under the theme ‘Sustainable Development and Digital Disruption’, the workshop provided a forum to explore and contextualize a value-driven evaluation framework for large-scale ICT projects.

6G-MUSICAL @ CSNDSP 2024

The 14th International Symposium on Communication Systems, Networks and Digital Signal Processing (CSNDSP 2024) took place on 17-19 July 2024, in Rome, Italy.

6G-MUSICAL participated at the event through the presentation of a paper which addresses a critical challenge in Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC): the design of fully connected hybrid analog-digital (HAD) beamforming for multi-user, multi-beam systems.

6G-SUNRISE @ IEEE CLOUD 2024

On 7-13 July the IEEE International Conference on Cloud Computing (CLOUD 2024) took place in Shenzhen, China.

6G-SUNRISE partcipated to the event with the presentation of a paper titled “SAM: Revolutionizing Multi-Cloud AIOps Model Migration”.

ENVELOPE @ ONI CAV Event

On 3 July 2024, the Open Network Intelligence for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (ONI-CAV) Workshop took place in Catania, Italy.

The workshop aims to provide a networking and dissemination platform to discuss the current state of the art in Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) from academic and industrial perspectives.

Daniele Brevi (LINKS Foundation) talked about the ENVELOPE project in which a 6G network is being built in Turin to test the next level of interaction between cellular networks and CCAM services. , Marco Bazzani (Teoresi Group) highlighted advancements in funded projects including ENVELOPE.

2nd workshop on 6G Programmable Deterministic Networking – Call for Papers Deadline Extended – MobiCom 2024

In the scope of the MobiCom 2024 -The Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking, which will be held on the 18-22 November 2024, in Washington DC, DESIRE6G, DETERMINISTIC6G and PREDICT-6G will co-organise the 2nd workshop on 6G Programmable Deterministic Networking with AI (6G-PDN 2). In preparation for the workshop, the projects have launched a call for papers that contribute to the advancement of 6G network research.

ROBUST-6G @ ICUFN24

On 4 July 2024, Giovanni Perin from the project partner Università degli Studi di Padova (UNIPD) / University of Padua presented the ROBUST-6G project at the ICUFN2024 conference in Budapest, Hungary. This event enabled the project to highlight its work on various aspects of 6G security and the future of network technologies.
